Typing a long, mixed-case Wi-Fi password on someone else's phone is a small but universal annoyance — for guests at home, customers in a café, or visitors in an office. A Wi-Fi QR code fixes this: scan it, and a compatible phone can offer to join the network directly, with no typing required.
What Is a Wi-Fi QR Code?
A Wi-Fi QR code is a QR code that encodes your network's name and password (and its security type) instead of a link or a message. A phone that recognizes the format shows a prompt to join the network rather than opening a browser — the credentials are embedded directly in the pattern, so nothing needs to be looked up anywhere else.
How Does a Wi-Fi QR Code Work?
Under the hood, it's a specially formatted text string that both iOS and Android can recognize as network credentials:

Breaking that down:
- T — the security type (
WPAfor WPA/WPA2/WPA3,WEPfor older networks, ornopassfor open networks). - S — the SSID, i.e., the network name.
- P — the password (omitted entirely for open networks).
- H — whether the network is hidden (
true) or broadcasting normally (false).
When a compatible phone's camera app recognizes this format, it typically offers a "Join Network" prompt instead of opening a browser. Whether that happens automatically, and how the prompt looks, depends on the device, its operating system version, and the app used to scan — it isn't guaranteed to behave identically on every phone.
How to Create a Wi-Fi QR Code
Step 1: Find Your Wi-Fi Network Name
The network name (SSID) is what shows up when a device searches for Wi-Fi. You can find it in your phone's own Wi-Fi settings while connected, on a label on the router itself, or in the router's admin page. Enter it exactly as it appears — it's case-sensitive, so "MyHomeWiFi" and "myhomewifi" are treated as different networks.
Step 2: Enter Your Wi-Fi Password
Type the password exactly as set on the router. This is the most common place small mistakes creep in — watch for a capital O vs. the digit 0, lowercase l vs. the digit 1, and any trailing space picked up while copying it from somewhere else.

If you add a logo, raise the error correction level to Quartile or High so the code stays reliable. Once you're happy with it, download as PNG, SVG, or JPG — SVG is the better choice if you're printing at a large size, since it stays sharp no matter how much it's scaled up.

Scan the code yourself before printing or handing it out — ideally with both an iPhone and an Android phone, since behavior can differ between them. Confirm the device actually offers to join the correct network, not just that the code scans at all.

Open the Camera app (or Google Lens, depending on the phone) and point it at the code. On a compatible device, a prompt to join the network usually appears after a moment. Common Wi-Fi QR Code Problems
- The code doesn't prompt to join. Confirm the security type you selected actually matches the network — a WPA network encoded as "Open," or vice versa, produces a code that scans but won't connect correctly.
- "Incorrect password" after scanning. Almost always a typo in the password field — retype it carefully, checking for the character mix-ups mentioned in Step 2.
- The network name doesn't match. SSIDs are case-sensitive; double-check the exact spelling and capitalization against your router settings.
- It worked, then stopped working. The router password was probably changed after the code was generated — see the note below about regenerating.
- Some devices connect, others don't. This can happen with unusual characters in the password or SSID — try simplifying them if you're able to, or confirm the specific device's camera app supports Wi-Fi QR codes at all.
Regenerate the code whenever the password changes. A Wi-Fi QR code is a snapshot of the credentials at the moment you made it — it doesn't update automatically if the router password changes later. Old printed copies will just silently fail to connect.
Is It Safe to Share a Wi-Fi QR Code?
The network name and password are encoded as plain text within the pattern — anyone who scans the code, or examines it with any QR reader, can potentially see or use those credentials, the same as if you'd written them on a piece of paper. There's no built-in way to restrict who's allowed to scan it.
Because of that, place a Wi-Fi QR code only where the people you actually want on your network can access it — inside a home or hotel room rather than a publicly visible storefront window, for example. If you're sharing a guest network you don't mind strangers joining, that's a different consideration than sharing your primary home or office network.
