How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone and Android
No separate app needed — here's exactly how to scan a QR code using the built-in camera on iPhone and Android, plus fixes for when scanning doesn't work.

Both iPhone and Android have scanned QR codes natively through the camera app for years now — no dedicated scanner app required. Here's exactly how to do it on each, plus what to try if a scan isn't working.
Scanning on iPhone
- Open the built-in Camera app (not a third-party app) from the home screen or Control Center.
- Point it at the QR code, keeping the whole square within the frame.
- A yellow notification banner appears at the top or bottom of the screen — tap it to open the link, join the Wi-Fi network, or perform whatever action the code encodes.
That's the entire process — there's no shutter button to press and no scanning mode to switch into. If nothing happens after a couple of seconds:
- Check Settings → Camera and make sure Scan QR Codes is toggled on (it's on by default, but can get switched off).
- Make sure Control Center → Code Scanner isn't the only way you're trying to access it — the regular Camera app works too, and is simpler.
- Hold the phone steady for a second longer; some codes with dense patterns take slightly longer to lock onto.
Scanning on Android
Android's exact steps vary slightly by manufacturer, but the core flow is the same on stock Android, Samsung, and most other skins:
- Open the Camera app.
- Point it at the QR code and hold steady.
- A pop-up notification or on-screen banner appears — tap it to follow the link or action.
If the camera app doesn't scan automatically:
- Check for a Google Lens or scan icon within the camera app's shutter controls — many Android camera apps put QR scanning behind this icon rather than running it automatically at all times.
- Update Google app and Google Play Services — QR scanning on stock Android is often handled by these rather than the camera app itself, and outdated versions can lose the feature.
- As a fallback, open the Google Lens app directly, or search "QR scanner" in the Play Store for a dedicated app if the phone's built-in scanning genuinely isn't available.
Why a scan sometimes fails
If the camera detects a square but nothing happens, or it just won't focus on the code, the usual culprits are:
- Low contrast — a code printed in light gray or a low-contrast color combination is hard for any scanner to lock onto. Black on white remains the most reliable combination.
- Glare or curved surfaces — a laminated menu under bright light, or a code printed on a curved cup, can reflect enough light to obscure the pattern. Try tilting the phone or the surface slightly.
- Too small a code, too far away — QR codes need enough resolution at the scanning distance; a code meant to be scanned from across a room needs to be printed significantly larger than one held at arm's length.
- Damaged or obscured code — QR codes tolerate some damage thanks to built-in error correction, but a torn corner or a logo covering too much of the pattern can still push it past what the code can recover from.
- Low light — the camera needs enough light to focus and expose the shot correctly; try moving to better lighting or turning on the flash.
A quick checklist before you print
If you're the one distributing a QR code rather than scanning one, testing it yourself avoids all of the above becoming someone else's problem:
- Print a test copy at the actual size and material you plan to use.
- Scan it with both an iPhone and an Android phone, from a normal use-case distance.
- Check it under the lighting conditions it'll actually be viewed in — dim restaurant lighting is a common one people forget to test.
A code that scans cleanly on your desk under office lighting won't necessarily scan the same way taped to a dim bar counter — testing under real conditions is worth the extra few minutes.
