How to Reorder PDF Pages Online

Scanned a stack of paper and the pages came out in the wrong order? Or merged two PDFs and now the table of contents needs to move to the front? Reordering pages doesn't require reprinting or rescanning anything — just rearranging the pages you already have.

Try it now: Reorder PDF Pages → — drag pages into place and download.

What Does Reordering PDF Pages Mean?

Reordering a PDF changes the sequence its pages appear in — page 4 can become page 1, page 1 can move to the end, and so on — without touching the content of any individual page. The result is a new PDF with the exact same pages, just arranged in a different order.

This is a different problem from rotating a page (which is about orientation, not position) or deleting a page (which is about removing it entirely). Reordering is purely about sequence — a 10-page document stays a 10-page document, just read in a different order.

It's worth doing this step separately from other edits when a document needs several fixes. Trying to rotate, delete, and reorder pages all in your head at once is where mistakes creep in — sorting out the sequence first, then handling orientation or removal afterward, is usually the more reliable order of operations.

Why Would You Need to Reorder PDF Pages?

Some common situations:

  • A scanner or feeder put pages out of order, especially with double-sided scanning or a stack that wasn't sorted beforehand.
  • A cover page or table of contents ended up in the wrong spot after combining files with Merge PDF.
  • Chapters or sections need to be rearranged before sharing a report or document with someone else.
  • Pages from multiple scans got interleaved incorrectly, and need to be untangled into the right sequence.

In each case, the content itself is fine — it's just in the wrong position.

How to Reorder PDF Pages Online

  1. Open the Reorder PDF Pages tool.
  2. Drop your PDF onto the upload area, or click it to browse for a file.
  3. Once it loads, every page appears as a thumbnail, numbered by its current position.
  4. Drag a thumbnail to a new position to move it — or, if you're on a touchscreen or prefer not to drag, use the up and down arrow buttons on each thumbnail instead.
  5. Repeat until the pages are in the order you want. The position number on each thumbnail updates as you go, so you can always see the current order at a glance.
  6. Click "Download PDF" to save the file with the new page order.

If you've moved several pages and want to start over, "Reset order" puts every page back to its original position without needing to manually undo each move.

Using QR Ivify

QR Ivify's Reorder PDF Pages tool runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib — the PDF is read, rearranged, and rebuilt on your own device, with nothing uploaded to a server. Whatever order you drag pages into is applied locally, and the download is generated the same way.

On a touchscreen, drag-and-drop between thumbnails isn't consistently supported by every mobile browser, which is exactly why the up/down arrow buttons exist as a reliable alternative — they work the same way regardless of device.

Tips

  • Plan the final order before you start dragging — for a long document, it's easy to lose track of where you're aiming if you're moving pages one at a time without a clear target sequence in mind.
  • Use the position numbers, not just the thumbnail images, to confirm placement — especially useful when several pages look visually similar (like a multi-page table).
  • Use the arrow buttons for small adjustments even on desktop — moving a page just one spot is often faster with a click than a precise drag.
  • Check the first and last page specifically before downloading — cover pages and closing pages are the ones people notice fastest if they're out of place.
  • Keep your original file until you've confirmed the new order is correct, in case a page needs to move again.

Common Problems

Why isn't drag-and-drop working on my phone? Some mobile browsers don't reliably support dragging file thumbnails around a page. Use the up and down arrow buttons on each page instead — they move a page exactly one position at a time and work consistently across devices.

Why did a page end up in the wrong spot after dragging? Drag-and-drop reordering depends on where you release the page relative to the others — if the result isn't quite right, use the arrow buttons to nudge that specific page into its correct position rather than redoing the whole drag.

Why does the order reset when I upload a new file? Each new upload starts fresh with pages in their original document order — reordering is applied per-file, so if you need to reorder a different PDF, you'll set its order from scratch.

Why is my PDF still in the old order after downloading? Make sure you're opening the file you just downloaded rather than the original upload — the reordering only applies to the exported result, not to your source file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does reordering pages change their content? No — reordering only changes the sequence pages appear in. The content, text, and images on each page stay exactly as they were.

Can I move a page to any position, including the very end? Yes — drag a page anywhere in the sequence, including past the last thumbnail, or use the down arrow repeatedly to move it there.

Will reordering affect the file size? Only negligibly — the same pages are being reassembled in a different order, not recompressed or altered.

Can I reorder a scanned PDF the same way as a text-based one? Yes — reordering works the same regardless of whether pages are real text or scanned images, since it's rearranging whole pages rather than their contents.

What happens to bookmarks if I reorder pages? This tool rebuilds the page sequence but doesn't rewrite existing bookmarks or internal links — if your PDF has a table of contents linking to specific pages, double-check those links still point where you expect after reordering.

Is there a file size limit? Yes, 40 MB, consistent with QR Ivify's other PDF tools.

Can I reorder pages and then reorder them again differently later? Yes, but each visit to the tool starts from a fresh upload — if you need to make a second round of changes, re-upload the PDF you just downloaded and reorder it again from there.
